Programme Development

The context for the design of adult learning programmes is based on a programme development framework within an adult non-formal education perspectives as explicated in the National Policy on Adult and Non-formal Education. As such the various types and dimensions of adult education programmes are presented and studied within a system framework so as to inculcate a facilitative orientation and problem solving model in adult learning situations. Hence, an eclectic approach to the choice of the programme development strategies and procedures is adopted for matching instructional methods with learning tasks.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the academic programme of the department are:

  1. To train graduates who will facilitate learning for adults and youths who have never had the opportunity of formal education or who did not complete their primary or secondary schooling.
  2. To produce personnel who will work in the non-formal education component of the National Education System.
  3. To provide continuing education in emerging fields of the lifelong learning process and the knowledge based society such as community development, workers education, adult literacy education, women education, environmental education, peace education, continuing professional education, and in all fields of learning in which people require basic education skills, knowledge and other competences for survival, growth and development.
  4. To provide educational services as enshrined in the provisions for Adult and Non-formal education in the National Policy on Education (NPE).

 SCOPE

The department offers two major degree options:

  • Professional Options and
  • Related subject combination options

The Department offers four-years, three-year, and two year B.Ed. standard programmes. Students opting for professional courses in Adult Education have a choice in the following major areas

  • Literacy Education
  • Community Development
  • Adult Education Administration

The options are primarily for students who want to combine Adult Education with related subject areas. Such students choose the related subject from the following areas;-

  1. Igbo/Linguistics
  2. English
  3. Religion
  4. Economics
  5. Government
  6. Health Education

Students are given the theoretical and practical background required to function optimally in their respective areas of adult education specialization. In addition, students are given liberal arts background as well as a sound knowledge of the social, political, cultural and economic foundations of the society in which they are being prepared to work.

 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. University Matriculation Examination (UTME) Admission

Candidates possessing any of the following qualifications may be admitted into the four (4) Year Degree Programme:

  1. i)         Candidates seeking entry into the four year degree programme in the

six professional courses must satisfy the minimum university requirements.

  1. ii) Candidates seeking entry into any of the six (6) Adult Education subject   combinations must meet the University requirements in addition to the Departmental requirements into which they are seeking admission.

iii)        Candidates must possess credit passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificates (SSCE) or GCE, including English and a credit in Mathematics at not more than two sittings. In addition, an acceptable pass in University Matriculation Examination (UTME) qualifications for admission into the University four (4) year degree programme in Adult Education is required.

 

  1. Direct Entry (DE) Admission

Candidates possessing any of the following qualifications may be admitted by Direct Entry into the Three (3) Year Degree Programme.

  1. Candidates who hold either Diploma in Adult Education, Social Work, Religion, Health and Physical Education, NCE with at least merit or any other Diploma recognized by the University of Nigeria Senate, are eligible for admission
  2. (a) Two (2) credit passes in relevant subject at Advanced Level with SSCE/GCE ‘O’ level credit passes in three other subjects including English and Mathematics at not more than two sitting or

(b) Two (2) passes in relevant subject areas at advanced level with SSCE/GCE LO’ level in three other subjects including English and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

  1. (a) Passes in two (2) major subjects in relevant areas in NCE with SSCE/GCE ‘O’ level

credit or its equivalent in five (5) other subjects in not more than two sittings.

(b) Education is acceptable as a third “A” level subject for those taking courses in education.

(c) Two passes in 3(b) above with a school certificate credit or its equivalent in any three other subjects. The above qualification in (3a) should apply to students in Colleges of .Education to qualify for admission into the B.Sc. (Ed) degree programmes,

 

English Language and Mathematics Requirements UTME

In all cases, whether by Direct Entry or UME, the following shall apply: A credit in Mathematics and credit in English Language at the Senior School Certificate/GCE ‘O’ level equivalent are required of all candidates.
